Tomorrow’s Jobs Don’t Exist Yet – But You Can Help Your Kids Get Ready

Our children’s ability to earn an income is key to their future wellbeing – but the world of work is changing faster than ever. Generative AI is reshaping careers across every industry, with the World Economic Forum predicting a 40% rise in AI-related jobs to 2027.

So how do we prepare our kids for jobs that might not even exist yet?

1. Foster Curiosity and Life-Long Learning

In a world where new skills emerge every year, curiosity is your child’s greatest career advantage. Encourage them to explore, ask questions, and seek answers together – whether that’s researching how things work, building a robot, or experimenting with a new hobby. Learning becomes powerful when it’s driven by genuine interest.

Don’t underestimate your own influence. Share your experiences of lifelong learning – a short course, a new qualification, even a podcast you’ve discovered. When kids see you learning too, they learn that curiosity lasts a lifetime.

2. Build Skills That Never Go Out of Style

Future jobs won’t just be about coding or understanding AI – they’ll rely on creativity, empathy, teamwork, adaptability, and problem-solving.

Encourage these skills at home through simple moments: playing games together, sharing chores, debating ideas, or collaborating on a family project. These daily interactions build the soft skills that future employers (and AI) can’t replicate.

You can also explore free resources like the CommBank-sponsored Human Skills Academy developed with Year13, Skillin’ It, which helps young people understand and build skills they need to thrive at work and in life.

3. Give Them Hands-On Experience

Experience is the best teacher. Work experience or volunteering helps kids connect learning with purpose – and now, opportunities go far beyond the local workplace.

Through Year13’s virtual work experience programs, developed in partnership with CommBank and the Tech Council of Australia, young people can explore high-demand careers like Software Engineer or Data Scientist – earning certificates, points, and even rewards along the way.

4. Let Them Explore (Even the Weird Ideas)

If your child wants to start a YouTube channel, build a Minecraft mod, try animation, or sell crafts online – let them. These experiments build real-world skills: creativity, financial literacy, time management, and resilience. Even if their venture doesn’t last, the lessons will stay with them.

This is where Kit comes in.
